My Students

My 5th grade students are trying to adapt to how Covid 19 has altered their reality. Whether on the internet, television, radio, or friends, they hear about this virus daily. Some of my students just returned back to in-person learning this year and are so grateful to be back in the classroom.

These children are resilient and hopeful.

They come to school with bright eyes and smiles glad to be with friends. They care about one another. We have students in our class who need special accommodations and a student who just moved to the United States who is just beginning to learn English. The class shows awareness of others and acts with kindness to help with those needs.

My Project

One thing that I feel is important and I try to include as much as I can in my classroom is choice. Having choices helps students to feel that they have some control. I am requesting floor pillows so that my students can choose where they want to work independently. I have students who live with the challenge of focusing for sustained periods of time. Being able to get out of the conventional chair and desk helps them to better focus on their assignment.

Having these floor pillows will allow more of my students not only the choice of where they want to sit, but also let them do it more comfortably.

My students already have the choice to sit around the classroom for their independent reading time, writing in their journals, and working with partners. B.J. Skinner taught how positive reinforcement increases positive behavior. When my students are told they can choose their workplace, they still maintain the respect and responsibility of our classroom rules.

Supplying pillows and the sensory viewers for my students will not only help them be able to be more comfortable, but I hope it will also give them a place to de-escalate. The social-emotional repercussion of COVID-19 are not all known, but as teachers, we have noticed a difference. Fifth graders are trying to find their place among their peers and they don't always have the skills to deal with their emotions. I would like to be able to give them a pillow and a mindfulness activity to help them work through their feelings.
