My students need flexible and comfortable seating options, benches for our lesson space, and easy access to materials to engage in true writer's workshop.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Help us change the world!
This year I will have the privilege of working with 180 insightful, hilarious, and motivated 7th and 8th graders in the nation's capitol every single day.
My students attend a rigorous college preparatory middle school that serves a high-needs population in Southeast, DC. We are a Title 1 school; over 94% of my students received free and reduced meals. Despite the inequity they face, these scholars have committed to extended hours, more homework, and high expectations to reach their goal of heading to college in 2023 and 2024.
Our 48 minute writing workshop block is one in which we cannot waste a minute. We engage in learning, thinking, questioning, community-building, and most importantly - finding powerful ways to to tell our truth. We begin with a brief lesson at the carpet as a community and break into individual or collaborative work time where I individually confer with and support each of my writers.
We aim to grow as writers every day so that we are prepared for success beyond the classroom with fully-developed identities as critical readers, writers, speakers, and thinkers equipped to use our voice to change the world for the better.
My Project
When I think of moments where I was immersed in transformative work as a student - I often think to small moments using math puzzles on a rug, curled up in a reading nook, huddled in a circle with my friends on the field, or sitting under my desk working on a big project. This is often true of middle schoolers - they find the most interesting places and configurations when they are truly in that next level work mode.
We are in need of flexible seating options to get the lessons and materials we need to help us get straight to work and stay engaged in that crucial work of thinking critically and writing consciously so we can share our truths with the world.
I am moving into my sixth year teaching my amazing students and am looping up with them. In a survey, 94.7% of them told me they wanted to eliminate desks in favor of alternative, flexible seating options. Classrooms should reflect the students that they serve. Mine requested things like bean bag chairs, backjack chairs, stools, and pillows as well as easier ways to access our materials without me needing to help. I am requesting these enticing and flexible seating alternatives to make our class a space where they feel valued, comfortable, safe, and ultimately want to come to every day because they enjoy spending their time there. Benches will serve to frame our lesson and community space before they are released to engage in their work and trying out the writing moves and techniques we are experimenting with together.
It is seating and choice like this in our writer's workshop that will unleash previously uncharted depths in student writing because they will feel at home in our space. Please help us build our community.
