Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

About 80% of my students are English language learners. Our school is also one of the most ethnically diverse schools in Queens. Students speak a multitude of languages including English, Spanish, Hindi, Urdu, Bengali, Mandarin, Cantonese, Tibetan, and Arabic and 100 percent of our students receive free breakfast and free lunch.

Our school community of East Elmhurst/Corona is the epicenter of the COVID-19 pandemic in New York City.

Our students were hit hard during the COVID-19 pandemic. In order to reacclimate my students back into the classroom, support their social emotional learning, and support their academic learning, it is imperative that I have the ability to facilitate whole group discussion and instruction every day with independent and small group work sessions.

These families are already faced with many social and economic challenges. Their lives are already complicated and faced with many challenges. So many families were devastated by the COVID-19 pandemic and suffered some kind of loss. Our students and families are in need of comfort and familiarity in their classroom in order to continue to express themselves, discuss and share their ideas, purposefully create, explore, question, make self connections and connections to their peers.

My Project

Please help our Art Studio by giving our students these two flexible space student lap desks. We received our flexible floor seats a couple of months ago, but we do not have desks to go along with them. Flexible space student lap desks will give our art students the option of working alone, with a partner, or in a small group with their peers.

As we know all learners have different learning styles and some require a certain atmosphere to spark their learning and creativity.

I see many learners throughout my week with a variety of educational needs. These flexible space student lap desks will be vital in reaching those learners as well as introducing a new and useful space for others! I would like to maximize our usage of our flexible floor seats with these portable lap desks while providing more alternative options in our creative work space for all of our children.
