Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach fifth grade at a Title I school in Carpentersville, Illinois. More than 75% of the students come from low income families. Despite the many challenges they face, they come to school with smiles on their faces each morning and a readiness to learn. I look forward to teaching them everyday, and they enjoy learning, sharing ideas, and working together. I am always looking for new ways to reach every student and make their school experience as memorable as possible. My students are active learners, and learn well with movement. I have many students who work best when out of their desk in a quieter, less distracting place, or with the option to move as they work. My goal is to meet their needs by providing a classroom with flexible seating options to ensure that every student is comfortable, focused, and has the power to choose how he or she learns best in order to maximize their learning.
Even fifth graders like to move, wiggle, and wobble while learning.
I would like to purchase some stability balls, wobble chairs, and bean bags for my classroom to allow for easy movement while my students work independently or collaboratively with others.
My Project
Flexible seating means my students will be in charge of their learning environment. These options will allow them to move or wiggle as needed while still being engaged and on task. During independent or cooperative group work, balance balls, stools, and wiggle seats will be great options for students to move around the room and have a choice in their learning. Having a couple bean bag chairs in our reading corner will entice students to want to read independently while being in a comfortable setting.
I have seen how flexible seating can positively affect students in other classrooms, and I would love to be able to have these options in my fifth grade classroom next school year!
I am hoping that these additional options allow my students more choice, more fun, and more enjoyment while learning.
