My Students

My students are a part of a unique new program at our school. They are a symbol of the next generation of learners. They are part of a Chinese Immersion program in which half of their day is taught only in Chinese, the other half in English.

They are the next generation of learners, leading the way to a more globally conscious and culturally tolerant society.

Each one of my students is unique and special in their own way. I want to give my students the ability to appreciate and respect all people. Our classroom community provides my students the opportunity to see the world through new lenses and gain a better understanding of themselves and of the world around them.

My Project

A few weeks back, I had an epiphany..... I hate my classroom chair. It's ugly, hard, and no matter what I do I just can't find a way to stay comfortable for more than 10 minutes. I decided, that after work I was getting a new chair. As I was driving to find the perfect chair for me, it hit me.... while I can change where I'm sitting, and how I'm sitting, the kids, who are stuck in their (more uncomfortable) chairs way longer that I am, have no such option.

You can't do your best work unless you're in a comfortable environment, which is why I have moved to add floor seats and pillow options in our classroom.

I have slowly added in many different seating options, stools, wobble stools, stability ball chairs, and beanbag chairs. Once I finally had a good amount of options in the classroom, I took a step back and observed. Without a doubt, my students perform better when they are able to move, just a little. They need to be comfortable in their learning space.

The level of engagement and participation has greatly improved during times when students are asked to collaborate. My students are engaged and ready to learn with these seating options! Just think what these future world problem solvers can do when given the right seat!
