My students need to experience reading in a fun way. They'll just love reading with flashlights and monitoring the number of minutes they read. It'll make it so fun!

My Students
I have a classroom of 30 students from mostly low socioeconomic backgrounds. All students in my building receive free lunches. We are located in Jacksonville, Illinois.
Although my classroom dynamics are challenging, I wouldn't want it any other way!
These kids are not just my job, they bring joy to me every day. I love them like they are my very own.
In many cases, asking parents to supply items for my classroom puts a burden on them. The ones who have the means to do so are more than happy to at times, but asking the same ones all the time is unfair. I hope Donors Choose can help my classroom out!
My Project
I want to make reading more fun in my classroom. I want to use flashlights, bookmark timers, whisper phones and the "Who was.....?" and "What is....?" books that my students seem to love and that are not available in our school library.
I have seen many teachers introduce flashlight reading to their students and they love, love, love it!
With flashlight reading, I will turn out the lights, close the curtains and everyone will silently read with a flashlight. The students can use the bookmark timers to keep track of their daily in-class reading minutes. Many students like to hear themselves read, so the whisper phones will allow them to read aloud without bothering other students and to also help themselves hear their oral mistakes. The selection of books I chose are ones that the students have recently become interested in, so I would like to fill my classroom library with a wide selection.
I can't wait to see flashlight reading in action. The kids will be so thrilled.....anything to get them excited about a good book:)
