I have an amazing group of first graders.
I teach at an inner city school. They all receive free breakfast and lunch. They have experienced and witnessed so many things at such a young age so I work hard to make school a safe and fun place for them to learn.
My Project
I bet you are wondering what Flashlight Friday is!? This is my "Hook" to get my kids excited about reading. Each child will get their own flashlight, spooky reading finger, reading pillow, stuffed animal reading buddy and of course books at their level. They gather their necessary items and find a spot. Then, we shut off all the lights and close the blinds to create the right ambiance. I am hoping to build their reading stamina up to 30 minutes a day.
Each Friday I would like to add something special into the mix. I am hoping to invite parents, the principal, other students, aides and other special guests to read with the students. Some times we might have a special snack.
My students don't see the value in books or reading.
I am hoping to change their perspective and help develop a love for reading. Reading is my passion and I want it to carry over into my students. I have been searching for ways to get them excited about learning and I think this will get the ball rolling.
