My Students

Imagine being in a school without a gym or a playground or a field to provide daily exercise during the school day. We are currently housed in a facility that has neither of these amenities and our students are not able to get exercise during the school day.

Our program is a Day Treatment program for students with special needs.

Our population is quite diversified and over 90% qualify for free/reduced price lunches. Our students face many challenges in their lives so our program focuses on providing a nurturing and safe environment where our students get individual education plans (IEP) that focus on developing skills that will help them be successful in their school, home and life. Although they have challenges, our students come to school because they get specialized attention and they feel safe. Our students enjoy learning, but they also enjoy physical motor breaks during the day in order to release some of their energy. Unfortunately, our current facility does not provide that outlet for them nor do we have necessary equipment of resources to provide indoor type physical activities.

My Project

The foam hockey set, exercise bars, exercise bands, jump ropes, an Ankle Dangle, disc set, and other equipment would be used to provide indoor type physical activities throughout the day. Some experts refer to them as motor breaks and others refer to it as brain gym, but whatever the label, it is a necessary part of the school day. We could move the desks and do a little jump rope activity, or have a hockey game in the large hallway, or just do some exercises with the various exercise bars. These activities would provide a mental change and release of energy and would facilitate subsequent attention to more academic tasks and minimize disruptive behavior. Physical breaks throughout the school day are an important element of classroom management and behavior guidance. It would also be a tool to encourage classroom participation and give the students something to look forward to.

Physical breaks are a necessary break from the academic challenges in the classroom.

Recess/physical activities offer cognitive, social and physical benefits to students. It allows students to work on their communication skills such as negotiation, cooperation, sharing and problem solving. These are all lifelong personal skills that carry on with our students. In previous facilities we had a gym, playground and outdoor field, but not in this building. Every student has the right to PE.
