Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Established in 1906, our school is the oldest high school in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

It was founded as Tulsa High School and was located in downtown Tulsa until 1976. The school now has a 47-acre campus in northwest Tulsa near the Thomas Gilcrease Institute of History and Art. Tulsa Central is part of the Tulsa Public Schools, Oklahoma's largest school district, and serves students in grades 9 through 12. Since 1997, it has served as a fine and performing arts magnet school.

Tulsa Central currently serves an extremely diverse student population of around 500 individuals. Over 88 percent of these students would be considered economically disadvantaged. Tulsa Central is where artistic expression meets growth mindsets, leading to endless opportunities.

My Project

Since the majority of our students are receiving free or reduced-price lunches, funding this project will allow students access to the equipment and generate the ability to learn how to actually catch their own food. We have an abundance of local waterways teeming with fish. Fishing rods and equipment will be used to provide greater access to these natural resources. We will also be able to use this to increase physical activity and study our local ecosystems. We've established a fishing team for those students who are interested in the non-traditional urban sport. The provided equipment, such as rods, wheels, and lines, will allow our students the ability to be better equipped and more prepared to pursue their outdoor interests.

This year it has been my goal to also support an after-school/distance learning outdoor adventure club in which we can offer unique experiences for our students.

Many of our students couldn't possibly afford to participate in these activities otherwise. From this initiative, we will be able to form competitive archery and fishing teams. Traditional sports are not for every student, and unique urban programs need to be developed. Economic hardships shouldn't stifle an already depressed generation of students.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
