First Serve Is In Your Hands! Let's Play Badminton!
Help me give my students an opportunity to learn a new sport generally not accessible to inner city youth. Badminton could lead them into new areas of life besides having a huge amount of fun!
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I've been in my school for 25 years and I'm part of the neighborhood! That said, post covid will bring some challenges to re-engage our kids.
I'm writing this for our great gym teacher.
I went up to the gym and saw a net and asked if he was teaching my favorite sport, badminton. "No, volleyball", he responded. "I'd love to teach them badminton and when they're ready, learn to play pickle ball. But I don't have the equipment for a full class."
I teach in a wonderful, yet low socioeconomic area. Since we are a Title I school, we get what's deemed important for our students, but interesting sports (not the usual ones we see in city schools) are even more important!
My Project
I grew up in the suburbs playing badminton. My folks spray painted a line across the street. My entire family and the neighborhood kids played furiously all summer. That led me to competitive badminton is HS and college.
My students in Spanish Harlem (East Harlem) don't have the luxury of learning the sport the way I did.
They've never even heard of it! Besides the social emotional benefits of playing sports w/friends (post-covid) and mastering the eye hand coordination (so different from the basketball they always play), this is perfect!
