First Peoples: Native American History and Culture

My students need 20 books about 4 different Native American groups.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Sicherman's classroom raised $425

This project is fully funded

My Students

This year, my kids will become experts on the Eastern Woodlands Native Americans who were once the only inhabitants of our area. But their understanding will be limited without the in-depth study of other Native groups that this project will allow.

My students are 3rd and 4th graders at a small, urban public elementary school in New York State.

They are an extremely diverse group, in terms of ethnic background, socioeconomic status, native language, and special education needs. My past classes have always been fascinated by our study of the Eastern Woodlands tribes. Now, I want to help them research and learn about tribes from other geographical areas of the United States.

My Project

After we complete our study of Eastern Woodlands Native Americans, my students will embark on their own research. They'll work in small groups to investigate the Inuits, the Navajos, the Sioux, and the tribes of the Pacific Northwest. This grant will provide for several well-researched, high-quality books about each of these Native groups. By studying their histories and cultures (both past and present), and comparing and contrasting them with those of Eastern Woodlands Indians, my students will gain vitally important learning experiences. They'll get an amazing lesson into how natural environments affect human societies--and vice versa. And my students will also learn essential research skills as they absorb, analyze, critique, and synthesize information from a variety of sources.

This classroom set of books about four Native American groups will be the basis of our comparative research.

By researching these tribes, my students will acquire research skills they'll use throughout their lives, as well as knowledge and respect for Natives and an understanding of how people interact with their environment. I can't wait to watch my students light up with their newfound knowledge and understanding!
