Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 3rd graders the rock cycle as it relates to earth's materials. We are in an urban, high poverty area and there just are no valid rock samples to be found outside of our school or their homes. My budget is very limited, so purchasing enough sets so all groups can examine first hand these different rocks is not possible.
My students learn best by seeing, and touching. I have only a few samples currently which doesn't really give them a clear picture of how rocks change over time. If they could see the rocks at each stage of the rock cycle then the "cycle" would have more meaning to them and make sense as they observe changes between the groups of rocks.
Rocks sets of the three stages (metamorphic, igneous, and sedimentary) will allow students to touch and see each type of rock. They will see that there are a variety of types per rock category. This abstract concept that takes millions of years to "simulate" would become more concrete to them.
Your donation would help my students learn the rock cycle and how it relates to their world. It will also actively engage them in their learning which also helps concepts embed themselves deeper in my student's long term memories, and increase their desire to learn more science.
