First Graders Try Their Hands at Growing Their Own Salad

My students need gardening tools, a soil pH meter and a fertilizer analyzer to assist them in growing vegetables to be used to make their own salads.

My Students

Do you remember wondering where your food comes from? How do we get lettuce and tomatoes? My students are eager to discover the joys of growing their own foods. By their own hard work, they hope to learn about where their food comes from.

My students live in a city and don't have a lot of opportunities to experience nature.

They are typical children with an incredible sense of wonder. Our school has a very diverse population and our students come to us from very different backgrounds. Our school has started a new environmental focus this school year and we are doing lots of very interesting and educational environmental projects with our children. However, many of our goals are hampered by lack of funds and not having all the necessary supplies that we need. Our children enjoy the environmental focus and are extremely motivated to participate in these activities.

My Project

My first graders are interesting in growing the various vegetables that we have in a salad. Our school intends to grow a large vegetable garden and all the different grade levels are planting different vegetables. We are starting our vegetables from seed and sprouting them in our greenhouse. After the frost, we will transplant them outside to the large garden and tend to them as they grow. When it is time, we will harvest them and make a salad using the different vegetables that we grow. This is a great hands on project for our students with the end results being a product they will enjoy. This experience will enable our children to learn about growing their own food and help them understand where we get our food. It also gives them a chance to take care of a living plant and tend to it. It teaches them a lifelong skill and gives them ownership to be a steward of our earth. Plus, they can taste how wonderful fresh food from the garden is!

Since a lot of our children don't get a lot of experiences in nature, this project gets them involved in working with their hands to grow plants.

It teaches them how to take care of a living thing and how to help take care of our Earth. It provides them with a lifelong skill and understanding our ways to support yourself and take care of the Earth that we live on. Hopefully it will also provide them with joy and appreciation of gardening.
