This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The weight that many of my students carry on their shoulders is far beyond what any six-year-old should have to bear, but still, 22 bubbly faces bounce into my classroom each morning, ready and eager to learn. I am so grateful to know each of them and their families.
I teach at a school where 95.2% of students are socioeconomically disadvantaged and 67.7% are English Learners.
Only 35% of adults living within my school's zip code have graduated from high school. The students I work with every day battle tremendous challenges, but they are incredibly bright and resilient and many of them have made tremendous progress this year despite the challenges they face.
My Project
We need a large rug for our classroom so that every student can have his or her own place to sit comfortably during whole group instruction and story time. In first grade, students gather on the carpet multiple times a day for lessons across all subject areas. We come to the carpet to share in the morning, to hear stories, to learn and practice new reading, writing, math, and English-speaking skills, and so much more! This rug specifically will be a wonderful addition to our classroom because of the colored squares. The squares will make it very easy for each student to have his or her own place to sit every day and to be clear about who his or her partner is.
The rug that my students have been using so far this year has been around the school for ages and has seen better days!
It has been well-used and well-loved and is torn and dirty beyond repair. A new rug would really improve our classroom environment and would help students to have pride in their classroom. The calming colors would be a welcome change from the bold, stressful colors of our current rug. Please help my students to have a clean, safe, and calming learning environment!
