My Project

Help me give my students a place to sit and relax while they read to our classroom hamster and enjoy their favorite books. Having this special hamster reading spot in our classroom will give the students a designated special place to grab a book and read. The flexible floor seating will provide comfy seating for students and the pop-up small animal area will allow the hamster to be safely out of his cage.

Reading aloud to animals can boost kids' literacy skills.

My students will have the opportunity to bond with our classroom hamster while practicing reading without any judgment. Reading to our hamster will provide my students a way to read without mistakes being corrected. Often, students will bond with the animal they are reading to and it will motivate them to visit the animal over and over again to read aloud. Over time, a student will begin to feel more comfortable reading to build their confidence and improve their reading skills. Animals don't mind if a student reads the same book over and over again.

These items will provide a safe listening environment for kids to rack up lots of reading practice. The benefits of reading to animals isn't just for the students; animals are also helped from the attention they receive. It gives kids a sense of purpose when they sense the animals are benefitting from their kindness and attention through the act of reading.
