First graders need to be engaged in their learning, not just sitting while I talk them to sleep. Think about how you, as an adult, learn best and apply that to our young children in public schools. To keep our brains alert and ready to learn, we have to keep our body awake and engaged.
My 28 First Graders come from a high poverty area but they are eager to learn and grow.
Each one of them is excited about the new and fun things they will learn at school. Unfortunately, because we are located in a high poverty area money is limited. What this means is that I purchase the supplies and materials needed for my students. As a single mother of two teenagers, this is a difficult task for me to pull off every year. I want each of my students to be successful in every area of their lives and will do whatever I can to ensure this happens.
My Project
With 28 students I use a lot of small group instruction. The materials I am asking for will help with that instruction while allowing me to spend more one-on-one time with my kiddos who struggle. Each child must feel independent in their learning to achieve mastery of the skills and these materials will assist in that area. Students can work in small groups independently, giving me more time to assist those who need a little extra help to master the task of reading. The folder games and sight word boards will give my students practice in early reading skills that are crucial for successful completion of future reading state tests. The reading skills set will allow each of them the opportunity to gain mastery of these reading skills to ensure they progress as they advance through the grades.
This project getting funded will change each and every one of my students by giving them a better chance of mastering the art of reading.
From letter recognition to decoding of words, each child deserves the opportunity to excel at reading. This project is just the beginning of that journey for each of them.
