My students need a set of Reading and Writing activity stations and a set of Ready to Go Sorting Charts to build phonics and vocabulary skills to improve their reading and writing scores.
First graders have the best job, they get to read and write everyday! This is how we begin our morning meeting everyday. My students are excited about reading, however, many of them lack the vocabulary and phonics skills to succeed in these academic areas.
My students are outstanding scholars.
We are a building that is over 70% minority and over 75% free and reduced lunch. With our minority and economic status, many of my students come to school with a limited vocabulary and phonemic awareness for language. In order to get them reading and writing at grade level, as a team of teachers we are always creating and making language, vocabulary, and word work centers and pocket charts to improve their learning. My students are excited about school and work hard, but they come to me with a large achievement gap when compared to other students in our district.
My Project
The Reading and Writing Activity Centers, along with the Word Sort Charts will help my students in so many academic areas. From their reading and writing scores, to their vocabulary improvements, and knowledge about letters, sounds, and word patterns. With these resources we will be able to give the students MANY options for improving their reading and writing skills with several activities and practice opportunities for them to get to a proficient level for first grade. Some of these activities include writing to a prompt, practicing spelling words, using punctuation, etc. In word study they will learn about words patterns, creating new words, rhyming words, etc. With these materials they will learn about phonics, word study, reading, and writing skills to improve their language arts skills in first grade.
This donation will make a HUGE difference in the reading and writing lives of my first graders.
By improving their phonemic awareness, reading, and writing skills we will be able to open up a world of opportunities for them to rise up and challenge themselves. Thank you so much for considering my students and their literacy needs in my classroom.
