This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Please help me buy some cute books for some even cuter kids. The kids are first graders at a K-8 school in South Florida. The books are all about the pout-pout fish. What is a pout-pout fish?
If you deal with first graders every day like I do, you will know exactly what a pout-pout fish is.
If you don't, you had better go to poutpoutfish dot com . There, you'll meet our hero, whose face seems to be stuck in a permanent frown. Of course, by the end of book one, thanks to the friends he meets under the sea, the pout-pout fish realizes that there is no need to be gloomy, and that, after all, a frown is just an upside down smile.
My Project
The other pout-pout fish books follow the same format. Our hero learns to flip his negative emotions and to live his life to the full. In 'The Pout-Pout Fish Goes To School', for example, he is worried about his first day at school until he finds out what a swell place school is. I guess you can see why I want to expose my first graders to this book series. The pout-pout books are fun, colorful, they deal with young children's concerns, and they teach positive life lessons. The values that they teach - empathy, risk-taking, cooperation, commitment - tie in beautifully with the values espoused by our Primary Years / International Baccalaureate Program. The great thing about the pout-pout fish books is the wealth of follow-up activities class available for teachers on the internet. Take one example: check out the ideas for hands-on pout-pout fish projects at pinterest.com .
I have used a library copy of the first pout-pout fish book in my own class, and those of other first grade teachers.
I know that the first graders at our school will love to read all the books in the series. Please help me obtain these books for my children!
