This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Fitness in First Grade is fun and fundamental! Way back when, students went to PE class and learned fundamental skills to encourage physical fitness, balance, and coordination. Let's return to the days when students thought fitness was fun!

My 24 first graders attend school in California.

They are an active and eager bunch. They enjoy school and learning, but like most first graders, one of their favorite times of days is RECESS! They love to play outside. 100% of the families in our school are below the poverty line. Our neighborhood is comprised of many apartments and little to no grass for playing. My students need and deserve fun, inspiring activities to get their bodies healthy and moving!

My Project

I have requested some fabulous physical education materials. One item I have requested is a fitness center that includes colorful cones, rubber balls, beanbags, cones, and jump ropes. My students will be so motivated to participate in activities and obstacle courses using these beautiful materials. I have also requested ball/basket toss and spoon/ball games to improve my first graders’ hand/eye coordination. Hula hoops will be used as targets in bean bag tosses, as well as a cardio endurance activity. The rubber activity mats display pictures and words that direct students in appropriate activities.

This project is important because obesity is a growing problem in the United States of America.

Physical fitness has been given less priority than academics. Many families, especially those in low socio-economic neighborhoods, are not focusing on healthful practices in eating or in fitness. I’d like to guide my students in leading a more healthful lifestyle where eating healthy and exercising are fun and satisfying!
