My students come from a high-poverty low-income community. They live in the poorest county of New Jersey. Some of my students' parents work two to three jobs to take care of the bare necessities of everyday life. While their parents want the very best for them, the extra things in life may not be able to be provided. About seventy-five percent of my students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch and cannot readily afford materials to help enhance their education.
My students have faced many challenges in their young lives where school tends to be their only constant.
In our first grade classroom, we like to keep things exciting. There are a lot of important skills that my first graders need to master before they are ready for second grade. They love working with each other and learning new things!
My Project
My students will benefit from having basic art supplies on hand to create fun projects related to our curriculum. They love adding pictures to their writing, but need the proper tools to do so! Crayola crayons and colored pencils are both durable for kids but also create vibrant colors for the kids art work. White construction paper is always a hot item in first grade, therefore we go through it quickly. My kids love to display their art work, it gives them a sense of pride!
I want to be able to allow students to step away from routine workbook pages and let them participate in more hands-on learning.
These donations will allow them to incorporate art into their daily lessons and activities. The tools needed for artistic expression will allow the students to exercise their creativity in an unlimited manner.
These students don't have access to art supplies at home and this project will allow them to explore their creative sides while increase their leisure and social skills.
