Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

As a first grade teacher, I want to create a classroom where every child can develop the confidence and skills they need to become an independent reader. My first-grade students will be at different stages of their reading journeys, and some may need additional time, practice, and encouragement to decode words, build fluency, and understand what they read.

This project will provide engaging, hands-on reading materials in color, using the printer, that allow students to practice essential reading skills independently and at their own pace.

Rather than viewing slower reading as a limitation, I want my students to see reading as a skill they can strengthen through practice, persistence, and the right support.

For a beginning reader, a difficult word can sometimes feel like a wall. With the right tools and repeated opportunities to practice, that wall can become a stepping stone.

I want my classroom library and reading centers to give students opportunities to say, “I can try this myself.”

The requested resources will support small-group instruction, independent literacy centers, partner reading, word practice, and quiet reading time. Students will be able to choose materials that are appropriate for their reading level and interests while continuing to build foundational skills.

As a first-year teacher, I am especially excited to establish a classroom culture where mistakes are part of learning and where every reading attempt is celebrated.

My goal is not simply for students to read faster. My goal is for students to become more confident, strategic, and independent readers.
