Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Every day our students begin class by reciting the Army Junior Cadet Creed and the Pledge Of Alliance to the Flag. Our biggest challenge is getting functioning equipment. Students will be safe, competent, and have fun. My favorite quote is "It's hard to beat a person who never gives up." -Babe Ruth
Our students are inner city youth, mostly from lower social-economic backgrounds.
They are full of energy and desire to learn. They like the marksmanship class because it gives them a sense of accomplishment as their skills build. They get to travel to other schools and socialize and compete in marksmanship with kids outside of their normal circles. Most of them have never handled a firearm but are exposed to them in their households. This class teaches them in a safe classroom environment and with practical instruction how to safely and properly handle firearms by target shooting.
My Project
The three air rifles requested will be added to the 5 other sorter class air rifles we have that were acquired through a grant two years ago. They meet the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) requirements for CMP certified marksmanship matches. We have 30 students signed up for the marksmanship team next year. This is an increase from 12 this year. These new rifles will serve two purposes. They will allow more students more time on the range and they will allow an additional team to be equipped with air rifles that will allow them to be competitive with equally equipped teams across the state. Students learn several skills during their time in this class in addition to safety and marksmanship skills. These include self discipline, hand eye coordination, analytical thinking skills and self confidence.
Three new rifles will allow more students to be actively engaged at once during our class.
They will require less maintenance than our older, poor functioning equipment which will result in more kids on the range practicing their skills. In addition they will make our marksmanship team more competitive against teams who are already equipped with this quality or better air rifles.
