My Students

My classroom is comprised of 18 energetic learners living in a rural community, with a high number coming from economically disadvantaged families. These hard-working children were welcoming to this Florida transplant teacher!

School is where we become connected with the modern world.

People take technology for granted, yet it isn't available to all equally. Many families in our rural county cannot obtain cable, high speed internet, or even consistent cell phone service. Thus, our school is an important community resource.

My Project

With the use of 4 Amazon Fire tablets, struggling reading students benefit from assisted reading through audio-books. All students express high interest in reading using updated technology. We will be able to replace books on tape (and cassette recorders) and books on CD (and a boombox) during our Reading Center time.

Students will "escape the classroom" and see the world using the Fire tablets.

Economic and geographical disadvantages will be minimized when we have access to these classroom tools. The children will increase familiarity with real-world 21st century skills.

While Fire tablet use is intended to replace old technology during our Literacy block, their use is not limited to one subject area. They provide an avenue to explore math, social studies and science, as well.
