I teach first grade in a county school where we recently lost a student in a house fire. He was a student of mine last year and the loss has been overwhelming. Unfortunately, the house where they were staying had heat detectors, not smoke detectors. The question of whether I could have done more to have prevented the student from losing his life has prompted me to write this proposal.
In my student's memory, I would like to implement a strong fire prevention course throughout the first grade. The goals of this course would include teaching the students safety measures that they can take to prevent fires in the home and what to do if a fire does occur. I would like to involve the local volunteer fire departments and provide them with the materials that they need to come into the school and present the program in a meaningful way. Such items such as activity books, escape maps and window safety stickers would be used to make this program a more child friendly presentation. Along with activity books to reinforce the message of fire prevention, I would also like to see the children take an active part in their families' fire readiness.
It is my goal to supply a smoke detector and batteries to be installed in every first grader's home. This program could have a huge impact on this rural area, where many of the homes are older homes with insufficient safety measures.
I want all first grade students to have the opportunity to learn fire safety rules so if they, like their lost friend, are in a situation where their lives are in jeopardy, they may have the tools they need to get out alive. It is my goal to make the loss that our community has felt into a positive thing, which I feel is what Steven would have wanted.
