Since my students come with different learning styles and behavioral needs, creating an environment where each child feels successful can be challenging, but it is my top priority as their teacher. I have students who work very well in a small group setting, others thrive being able to work alone where it's quieter, and then I have those who just need space to move because sitting still is difficult. I am one of a few classrooms in our school that has transitioned to flexible seating so that I can address the preferences and needs of my students. Giving my students the gift of choice has brought a new excitement for learning in my classroom!
Flexible seating has also fostered decision-making skills in my students, and it has taught them to make responsible choices that allow them to be their best self and learn in a space that is comfortable.
My students come in each morning and select their learning space for the day which can range from tables with high chairs, to seats that wobble or a space on the ground. I love that each individual takes charge of their space and works very hard to keep it.
My Project
I started asking for materials to change my classroom to a new learning environment for my students last October. The change has been so inspiring and has given my students a new love for learning.
They love choosing their best learning space!
Soon I will be receiving the furniture that my district will be providing for my classroom; however, my students need a comfortable cushion for their bottoms on the hard chairs and privacy in their new space when taking tests or just for working purposes. I hope that you'll consider helping me meet my final goal and finishing off this new learning environment that allows my students to be successful.
