My Students
All students are diverse and energetic 5 and 6 year olds in a southern Arizona Title 1, STEAM (science, technology, engineering and math) school.
99% of our students qualify to receive free lunch.
Most are English Language Learners, including refugees from Africa, Asia, Mexico and the Middle East. All coming from low-income households, living in neighborhood apartments and trailer parks. School is often the first place my students are exposed to literacy, math and STEAM activities in English. They come from homes where education is often not a priority, making the initial readiness gap wider. They strive to do their best against the odds and are always excited to come to school and learn.
My Project
What better way to work on fine motor skills than through writing, art, and play?
My students will have the opportunity to write on primary-lined white boards while using correct letter formation and location placement, manipulate play dough to make letters and numbers, and thread objects on laces.
The best way to improve fine motor skills is through tactile experiences. I want to give my students the opportunity to roll, pat, bend and create with their hands. I want my students to practice their pincher grip while writing on white boards using proper formation and placement.
I am also in great need for a library book shelf for my students to access classroom books.
