My Students

Each day my students arrive at school after being on a bus for at least an hour. They arrive hungry and tired. As they get off the bus in the morning they know that they are a part of a class that is 'different' than their same age peers. My students are fighting an uphill battle and they need your help.

My students' are all in a Special Education classroom.

Their disabilities range from Autism, Down Syndrome, visual processing disabilities, auditory processing disabilities, intellectual disabilities, and emotional disturbance issues. On top of this, some students also having the additional challenges that come with being second language learners. All my students live in high poverty neighborhoods where crime and violence is considered a natural part of life.

My class is an active and safe place where we engage in numerous activities that allow learning to happen in ways that are as unique as my students. We also focus on real world learning objectives where students will be able to manage their lives and their finances to a degree that might break the cycle of poverty.

My Project

My student have more academic, physical, and emotional challenges than I can possibly meet in one day. With the items I am asking for, we will be on our way to making a great start. All of my students are reading at least 3 grades below level. The Listening Center will allow 6 students to listen to stories they love while following along with the book ( a classroom aide will be with them to insure they are learning to follow along). During this rotation time I will be able to work with another group of students on their one motor and auditory processing and visual processing skills as I guide them through the steps needed to create an origami project. They love origami, even though it is frustrating, because they walk away with something they made. Lastly, another classroom aide will be with the last group of students allowing them to 'play' with the skipping ropes. While they think they are having fun I will know they are developing gross motor skills, balance, and confidence. Doesn't his sound like a perfect way to spend part of the day twice a week?
