This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
As a school-based occupational therapist working in Miami, FL, I work with many students who require intervention to improve their fine motor, visual motor, and visual perceptual abilities. These students struggle with handwriting abilities, self care skills, and overall lack of coordination when engaging in age-appropriate tasks.
My students continue to require intensive intervention in the areas of fine motor skills, visual perception, and pre-writing abilities to assist them with continued school success.
My children have recently taken up an interest in performing more table top tasks since utilizing flexible seating options. Most of my students have recently expressed interest in playing more games and engaging in puzzles to improve their school success.
My Project
While organizing my intervention room over the last few weeks, I have realized that a lot of my games and puzzles are either missing pieces, broken, or not appropriate for my younger population to use. My younger students have recently requested more fine motor based toys that are not electronic, and can be done either with or alongside their peers. The puzzles that I have requested can fulfill my varying skill range within my younger population. Some students are still sorting shapes, while others are learning to put pictures together via interlocking puzzles. The games requested, such as Gumball Grab and Feed the Animals require the use of tweezers, which will foster a tripod grasp necessary for handwriting development. The Magnetic Mosaic game will improve pinch and coordination abilities within children who have already demonstrated beginning development of this tripod grasp. The dressing boards will improve self care abilities in my students to become more independent in all areas of development throughout the school day.
Pre-writing abilities, overall fine motor skills, and visual perception are vital skills that young children need to become successful in school.
Without proper early intervention of these skills, students will have difficulty in the areas of coloring, writing, copying, and fine motor coordination required to complete school based tasks. Please help my students achieve these successes to be the best students they can be!
