This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students enjoy using their fingers during play. For example, they enjoy using play-dough and sand, working on puzzles, drawing, writing, and making a variety of objects using manipulative pieces. They like to talk about what they have made/done and receive feedback about their creations.
My students like becoming experts at what they do.
When they have mastered making something with one type of material, they like to try that same idea with other materials. When they have become comfortable with putting one puzzle together, they like to move on to other puzzles, so that they can build their proficiency. They are motivated to make progress in their chosen path/pursuit.
My Project
My students are at a critical stage of development: their brains are growing rapidly and the window of learning is wide open. As such, I must maximize every opportunity to fulfill their potential. This is why they need to have several opportunities to develop their fine motor skills.
Playing with sand and working on puzzles help my students sharpen their fine motor skills.
Developing their fine motor skills is essential to their academic progress and life skills, as it has implications for using pencils, scissors, zippers, buttons, among other skills.
When my students play with the sand, they mold a variety of objects, with or without a mold. Picking up and positioning the molds and shaping the sand help prepare their fingers for having the proper pencil grip. When they work on puzzles, they have to position their fingers in pinching formations to pick up the puzzle pieces. These formations help to train their fingers to hold a pencil correctly.
