Finding Yourself in Literature

Help me give my students books where they can find themselves. Every student deserves to feel like they belong, and books can be so powerful in doing just that.

My Students

I am going into my second year of teaching for 2020-2021. My first year has taught me tons, and I am continuously learning new ways to better my students and myself. I live in a very diverse community. My students come from all over, and they have various needs. My school does not receive much funding, and it has been challenging to create a classroom on low funds.

"There is no other profession in the world that directly or indirectly touches the lives of people at the same level teachers do," (Shelby Erasure of German American History).

I want to build a community in my classroom that focuses on handling our world and learning what it means to treat others. I want my students to feel that they are accepted and encouraged to be their true self inside and out. A way I can do that is with your help in providing resources that will create a comfortable environment where the students are engaged in their learning and care about their education! I am trying to fill my classroom with books that ALL students can relate to in some way.

My Project

I have carefully selected a list of books where students can read and discover that there are countless people in the world like them. There is so literature surrounding us, but I feel like we don't read enough books that our wide variety of students can relate to.

Nothing is more rewarding than reading a story, and a student saying, 'Wow, That person looks just like me!" I want my students to be educated in the culture of our world, and these books will allow us to have wonderful conversations and feel more connected to each other than ever!
