My Students

Help our brains grow in our compost bin!! My students rarely get to experience and gain background knowledge with hands-on Science activities due to budget constraints.

This will be my first year teaching third grade after teaching fifth grade for six years.

Our school is a small school in a rural setting in the mountains of North Carolina. Our community has lost most of the jobs due to manufacturing/textile plants closing, putting my kids at a great disadvantage of having enough resources to learn. My students do not often get to experience hands-on activities with learning due to lack of resources. These students are eager to learn and we have learned to make do with the resources we do have. It would be awesome to get to have a bigger selection of resources to get them more engaged in learning.

My Project

Composting and recycling play an important role in our content in third grade Science. With the addition of the two composting bins and worms, my students will get up close and personal with the process of insects, environmental factors, bacteria, etc. in helping with the decomposition cycle of our environment. Students will be able to take organic leftovers from lunch and add to our compost bin to see this process in action. When the cycle is complete, we will be able to start plants to go into our community garden that was created last year. This will not only teach concepts about our environment and sustainability but also community involvement.

In the last few years, the stewardship of our environment has become a big issue.

My students will learn that simple steps can help cut down on landfill material and be turned into usable potting soil to grow vegetables and flowers to add to a community garden or landscape. They will get a hands-on perspective of the decomposition cycle and how certain insects, animals, and environmental factors play an important role in this process.
