Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My 3rd-6th grade students are a beautiful, ethnically diverse group of children. Many are learning English as a second language. Many are deeply impacted by poverty and often face complex emotional and physical challenges.

Research indicates that drumming assists in releasing emotional trauma while having a positive effect on behavioral issues, fatigue, anxiety, and depression.

The drums and supplies I am requesting will help my 180 students foster a positive classroom culture while learning about music theory history, reviewing math and ELA concepts, and enhancing motor skills.

Incorporating award-winning children's books into our world music units promotes literacy while they play together. Here are a few of the music units and accompanying books.

Drum Dream Girl - Cuban, Mexican, and South American Music and Culture

Bow Wow Pow Wow - Native American Music and Culture

Ada's Violin - Making instruments out of trash and everyday objects

Dancing Hands - Venezuelan music and the impact one child can make

To Be a Drum - African drumming, music, and culture

Firebird and Sulwe - Believing in yourself and working hard to make a difference

The world drums will significantly enhance the impact of these lessons on my students. My students are eager to learn, play, create, discover, and communicate, and I am willing to help them flourish through music, the world's language.
