When I closed my 2nd grade classroom door on the first day of school this year, instead of chatty happy students, the room was silent. Some students had tears in their eyes. Others were looking down at their desks or silently looking around the room. In those first moments, I knew that this was not going to be an “ordinary” year. These children had not been in a classroom since kindergarten and now they were suddenly expected to be 2nd graders. In that moment I became determined to help it be not an ordinary year but the most extraordinary year. With a library full of diverse children’s literature, my students will be able to see themselves and their classmates through the pages of our books. Finding these mirrors, windows and sliding glass doors will help fill their social and emotional needs. The books will build personal and community confidence and pride with themes including food, language, cultural events, music, art, rhythm and dance, grandparents, clothing, conservation and recycling, science, nature and more. To add to the experience, I will bring world instruments for the students to listen and play and they will attend a virtual pow wow. As we gather around the circle rug, our classroom community will flourish through discourse, discussion, listening and reading. This literary journey will add meaning to CKLA Listening and Learning curriculum are “Immigration” and “Fighting for a Cause”. Major standards are SL2.1, 2, 4, 5, RL2.1, 3, 4, 7, RI2.1, 2.
