We are a rural Title I school, and many of our students face financial hardships. 64.4% of our students receive free/reduced lunch. We have many Spanish ELL (English Language Learners) and teachers that work hard to foster a sense of school community and inclusiveness.
Many of our students haven't traveled more than 100 miles away from our small rural community.
Their families struggle to pay for gas, so the opportunities to get outside the county don't happen often. It is my goal to bring art, culture, and other things from around the world into my classroom; to help our students learn more about the world and places beyond where we live.
My Project
I am privileged with being able to come up with my own elective class to teach, and I wanted to create something that gave students a platform to be creative and express themselves in clever and fun ways. My class is called Artistic Poetry; it combines a variety of arts and crafts with poetry writing.
Students who may be having difficulties in other parts of the school curriculum may find an expressive outlet through art.
This project will help students have materials and art supplies to support their creative innovations and written work. We will be using socks and other materials to sew animals, like pigs, which includes the real-life skill of learning how to sew on a button. Students will be able to individualize their pigs by making accessories and clothes. Then, students will paint and write poems about their creation. We will also make stained glass window creations using construction paper, Exacto knives, and tissue paper. Projects like this give students opportunities to bring things deep in their imaginations come to life.
The cardstock will be used to create their poetry pieces that will connect to their art creations! Students will be able to use the paints and canvas to create a final piece for their families at the end of class, as a symbol of their journey throughout the school year and their adventure in the Art Poetry class.
Due to the class being an elective, there is not a lot of additional funding for classroom supplies. Thank you for taking the time to help my students find their inner artist and be able to express themselves through art.
