My students are a diverse group with mixed ability. Every student in the school from KG - Grade 6 has a music lesson every week. My students love their music lessons and look forward to their lessons every week!
Approximately 30% of my students come from Military homes, music is a source of comfort and creative outlet for them who are missing their deployed parents.
Music is a time for them to be creative, collaborate, have fun, develop leadership skills, move, listen and make music together.
Approximately 85 students participate in music before and after school, activities include guitars, recorders, and 2 string orchestras. The students are always enthusiastic to showcase their performances in our regular music festivals.
My Project
Please help us with hand drums! Developing a sense of a regular beat and internal pulse is essential to young musicians, it is a critical skill for my students to develop as we move forward with our music education. We play fun beat motion games, where we sing songs and tap the beat on our bodies knees, hands, and heads. I would love to develop these games by adding hand drums. But, I only have 8 hand drums, who do I choose to give them to? I would love to be able to give each of them their own small hand drum for our musical activities and beat motion games.
We could all play beat motion games together using hand drums, feeling the beat together and hearing the sound as a group.
My students LOVE playing the drums I currently have, exploring rhythms and beat together. All my classes would benefit if I had a class set of hand drums.
