Finding Stillness and Better Posture During Our Morning Meetings

My Students

I teach 18 wonderful 4th Grade students in a public school in Harlem, NYC. Our small school is an engaging and positive K-5 elementary school with small class sizes and only 1 or 2 classes per grade.

We pride ourselves in our approach to teaching the whole child, as well as the nurturing environment we have achieved.

We also have set up collaborations with school parents and local after school foundations. My students come to class each day with enthusiasm to learn and at the same time a great amount of energy in their rapidly growing bodies and minds. A critical part of our morning routine is our daily morning meetings. These set both the tone and structure for our day ahead and allow for routines to be set in place that allow my students to succeed.

My Project

In efforts to promote stillness in their minds and bodies, I would like to provide my students with different cushion and stool options for when we sit at our group meeting carpet. Some students are resorting to using their desk chairs - which can be un comfortable to then also sit on all day long – while others simply sit on the carpet.

Typically ½ way through our meetings students are finding themselves getting uncomfortable, fidigty and distracted.

I would like to purchase the cushions and stools in my shopping list below and will coach my students on the best ways to sit in each option to promote better posture and focus.
