This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

“There is more treasure in books than in all the pirate’s loot on Treasure Island.” –Walt Disney. My students live in a low income area with no bookstores in their neighborhood. Having Kindles in our classroom will provide my students with thousands of free books and the use of technology.

As an inner city sixth grade teacher, my students are struggling readers, English Language Learners, some have special needs and all live in a high-poverty area.

All of my students need a large amount of time each day with their eyes-on-text, which is necessary for their reading ability to improve. One of the greatest joys of being a teacher is watching a child go from being a book learner to a book lover. I am fortunate to work at a school that knows how important reading is to the academic success of students. I get excited when my students can’t wait to talk about what they've read. We read and talk about our books all the time. My students know that new technology is out there, but many of them do not have access to it. When I told them that I was trying to get Kindles for them to download and read many books on, Wow! , you should have seen the excitement in their eyes. This would mean so much to them.

My Project

Like I said, my students do not have access to bookstores in their neighborhood, but even if they did, many of them could not afford to buy new books that they would like to read. Recent budget cuts to libraries have also limited my students access to reading material. We live in an age of rapid growing use of technology. Most of my students have no computer or Internet access at home. The few that do, usually have older, outdated machines. Providing Kindle Fires will not just provide access to more books, it will allow them to become comfortable with the latest technology. The use of Kindles for reading will provide a level of engagement that is of interest to older elementary children. They will be salivating to read their books on this device! My goal is to do whatever I can to build a love for reading, and the Kindle will help get them hooked! B.F. Skinner said, “We shouldn’t teach great books; we should teach a love of reading."

Your donation to our classroom project for Kindle Fires will truly help close the achievement gap for these students.

It will bridge literacy with technology, and provide them access to a world of books they couldn't access otherwise. Thank you in advance for your support!
