My classroom is a challenge. Students walk in, possibly, a bit intimidated, but they leave vindicated. My students know that the work ethic in my room will push them to their limits, but that I will give them the tools and the time necessary to help them succeed. My students are some of the best out there.
Students deserve to read stories that reflect their lives.
Our entire school qualifies for free lunches due to income. Students often come to school in weather inappropriate clothes. Many of these instances aren't a full result of neglect, but a different standard of what is socially acceptable. I work with my students to show them that there can be an appreciation of their culture, but also that many companies and schools will require them to modify their work ethic. Our high English Language Learner population also adds in a different cultural element.
My Project
My students actually want more books! These resources will expand our classroom library and allow our students to pursue their interests with varied genres and book lengths.
We will use the high-interest books, like Try Not To Suck and Darkest Minds, in addition to other novellas and poetry books to reach students.
This will also enable some students to "bridge" the gap--as we have increased classroom reading. It is becoming "cool" to tote a book. This will expand the options for our students as our school library receives no budget.
Reading is the key to everything!
This project will assist students with expanding lexile levels and comprehension, something that will enhance school work. These titles will help bridge the gap. I've been successful in providing these super popular books to my English reading students, but I need to find a way to provide those types of materials to my Spanish reading students as well. By executing projects like these, I am developing life-long learners that will be productive in society.
