My Students

Kindergarten is a place for investigating our world through joyful play and shared experiences. Students come to school with a wide range of experiences and abilities, and Kindergarten is a place where children grow into students together as a community.

In this class, we explore our world through playful inquiry.

We come together from a wide range of backgrounds including a variety of cultures, races, socioeconomic backgrounds, and familial structures. Because of our wide range of personal experiences, it is important to provide a rich, engaging environment for building a foundation of playful shared experiences. It is these shared experiences that allow us to create a sense of community and an environment where students can grow and thrive.

My Project

Every child enters the classroom with their stories, stories about who they are and what makes them who they are. Children with special rights (those who are English language learners or students who receive Special Education services) are no less full of stories than their peers, and I aim to create an environment that supports all students to express the stories they have to tell and to learn by experience what it means to participate and share with their peers. Students will be given opportunities to interact and play with materials that allow them to discover their stories before dictating or writing them down. The block area is one place that provides my students with many opportunities to discover their stories. Adding a set of larger hollow blocks and arches will enhance the materials we already have to allow for larger building opportunities and lead to richer stories. Adding a multicultural set of block play people will allow all of my students to find figures that represent themselves and their families as they create their stories.

We hope for and strive toward creating environments that are playful, engaging, and naturally motivating with multiple opportunities for all children to enter into the work of becoming authors and storytellers.

Play is the most innate and natural learning strategy, and by providing a playful environment we provide our students with opportunities that are supportive of risk taking and provide a high level of interest. Additionally, providing students with special rights with this type of learning environment provides opportunities to use language to accelerate learning and a greater sense of belonging.
