The headphones that we were able to purchase for our building will help our students in a couple of ways. First, they will allow students to listen to music (or white noise) of their choice during work times, which helps them to focus and engage with their learning. Second, this will allow us to incentive positive behaviors through the use of classroom discos, where a class can earn the use of the headphones to listen to mainstream music as a class reward.\r\n When I told my students about the headphones, they were beyond excited. The thing that they are most looking forward to is being able to choose what they are listening to; since they don't have access to YouTube or similar music sites during school hours, they can only listen to music played by the teacher. The kids LOVE the Heggerty decodable books. They are beautifully illustrated and systematically written to reinforce previously taught spelling patterns. The students are able to experience reading success while being pushed to grow as readers. The kids couldn't wait to see the name of the next book and always looked at the skill focus before beginning to read. These were the books kids chose to reread independently after experiencing success during reading group time. These materials, in conjunction with a Spanish language program, will allow us to start off next year with a 1st grade cohort that has 10 - 15 students that will benefit from the materials. The top favorites have been the Taco and Pizza series and the Magic Treehouse graphic novels. Thank you for supporting ALL of the readers in my classroom.
