Nature is a fantastic classroom and has an intriguing curriculum, yet it is often overlooked in our data driven education system. Our school is surrounded by a beautiful forest and creek accessible by various trails. Let's get my kindergartners back to nature! "Studies show that outdoor learning delivers many benefits -- reducing stress, improving moods, boosting concentration, and increasing a child's engagement at school." This quote comes from Gwen Dewar in her article, Outdoor learning and green time: How kids benefit from learning and playing in nature. Last year I took my class on weekly walks in the woods. This year I want to build on this practice and expand the amount of time observing and recording how the outdoors inspire us. Through sketching and taking notes, we can bring nature back to our classroom to research, write and deepen our understanding of our natural surroundings. The class will be split into equal groups to share the four backpacks full of journals, clip boards, high quality colored pencils and nature guides funded by this Donor Choose project. Other supplies from the classroom such as magnifying glasses and bags for collecting treasures will be added to the backpacks. Each week a different individual from the group will be responsible for carrying the group's backpack. Learning with Nature: A How-to Guide to Inspiring Children Through Outdoor Games and Activities will be my starting point for creating engaging lessons for the class with the hope that their inspirations and interests will take over and guide our weekly walks. Thank you for considering to fund this project, I can't wait to get into the woods with my class!
