Finding Meaning in Folk Tales with Text Exemplars

My students need 4 class sets of books and copies of the exempler texts featured in the Common Core State Standards for the Grade 4-5 Text Band.

My Students

Angela Carter is quoted as saying "...fairy tales, folk tales, stories...[are] the most vital connections we have with the imaginations...[who] created our world." Exposure to enriching literature will enhance critical literary skills.

For the majority of my native desert dwellers, life in the southwest places limits upon my students' experiences and exposure to cultures beyond their own.

In contrast, the increasing literary demands placed upon them require a classroom library rich with an assortment of genres to peak their interests and provide multiple opportunities to manipulate texts.

My Project

The selected titles are cited as Common Core State Standards Text Exemplars, which will enhance our core reading series. The featured folk tales will create a collaborative curriculum unit - unveiling cultures, values, and lessons. Students are expected to "Compare and contrast the treatment of similar themes and topics and patterns of events in stories, myths, and traditional literature from different cultures." (CCSS RL.4.9)

The requested resources are sorely absent from our adopted reading series, and funding for supplemental supplies in the fifth largest school district is scarce.

Support for this project provides students with the required supplemental reading material to meet the demands of our Common Core State Standards.
