Finding Comfort in Kindles

My students need these Kindles to access our digital Science books in Spanish. They will also use their Kindle to access several ebooks on all different levels that I have available in English and Spanish.

My Students

We are have new students from Puerto Rico due to Hurricane Maria. My amazing and innovative class is 90% free and reduced-price lunch already, so, fortunately, they understand not having a number of luxuries. However, not having luxuries and not speaking the language is new to most of them.

I want our new visitors from Puerto Rico to feel like school is a safe and fun place to get away from the stresses of having to leave behind everything they once knew.

Our hurricane victims are welcomed into our classrooms, but with the lack of books in Spanish, they feel like outsiders when everyone else is reading independently. When reading our Science textbook, which is in English, they are feeling lost. I want to provide a classroom environment that not only welcomes them to Florida, but also let's them forget about their stress by escaping with a good book and accessing our Science book online in Spanish.

My Project

Many of our students are uprooted victims of Hurricane Maria. They are having trouble understanding our Science textbooks because they are only in English. With these Kindles my students will be able to access the Spanish version of our Science textbook. This will bring some comfort to them as they learn the same topics that my English speaking students are learning, but in their native language.

In addition to our online Science textbook, these Kindles will be loaded with a multitude of ebooks of all levels both in English and in Spanish.

My students will be able to read on their own level in Spanish, and begin the process of learning to read in English at a level they are comfortable with. When reading on a Kindle, no one will know what level book they are reading and they will avoid that embarassment from their peers.
