How many of the classic artists can you name and describe their style of art? What kind of reading did you dread in school? Fiction or nonfiction? Would you have enjoyed nonfiction texts if the information had been presented in a fun and exciting way?
We are a group of first graders, who love to learn.
We love to read and look at books that teach about weather, bugs, animals, art, and of course, Dr. Seuss. We love to draw and paint, and, if you leave a blank piece of paper around, we will find some way to use it for our new creations.
My Project
Through the use of the art materials, our class will learn about the different artist masters and their form of art. When learning about Van Gough, we will learn about still life and abstract art through using water colors and water color paper. We will learn how to create sculptures using clay that we can paint after it dries.
Learning to read informational texts is a difficult task. Using listening centers, games, comprehension cards, and other tasks will help the students to learn how to use and understand information as it is presented in textbooks and other informational texts. Wouldn't it be great to understand what you read in textbooks because you already have the strategies you need to find the important information? Through the use of short informational texts, comprehension cards, listening centers, and games, these first graders will be given the tools they will need to help them succeed in later grades.
The arts are becoming a lost subject in school.
We need to provide the opportunity to learn about the arts at an early age so that the students develop an interest and desire to learn more as they grow.
Informational text never goes away. As adults we are surrounded by manuals, news articles, books, etc. that we have to understand and comprehend. Starting the comprehension of informational text at an early age will help these children as they grow and become our future.
