Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are an elementary school based in San Francisco, CA. Much like the city we live in, our class of 48 is full of a diverse student population. We have learners coming from a variety of backgrounds and experiences.

This group of students was the founding kindergarten class of our school and has taken on a strong leadership role in the school as a result.

As a growing school, I am excited for these students to continue to explore their own identity and their own leadership in our school and our city.

My Project

We are hoping to diversify our classroom library to include characters and settings of all different races, ethnicities, cultures, and backgrounds. These books will be used to allow students to read about new characters as well as engage in discussions about race.

I want to ensure that all of our students see themselves in books in our library and that students are able to read about characters who are different than them and have different experiences.

Our class has recently realized that the majority of our books have white protagonists and want to find books with a diverse set of characters.
