This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our school is a K-5 Title I school with 100% of our students receiving free breakfast and lunch. In our low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with many challenges both in and out of the classroom. They face dilemmas daily that include hunger, anxiety, depression, grief, deployed parents, and much more. Most of our students will be first generation college graduates. Despite the many challenges they face, I look forward to keeping things simple and providing them with creative and meaningful learning experiences in a safe environment. My students are creative, energetic, and have an unquenchable thirst for knowledge. As the School Counselor, I work with students primarily on character education, social/emotional development, college and career readiness, and financial literacy.
My Project
My students need to learn financial literacy and the importance of budgeting and saving for today and a “rainy day”. They do not grasp the concept of saving and how it ultimately leads to financial freedom. My students need written literature, pretend dollars and coins, play checkbooks, and financial literacy games in order to bring this project to fruition. The requested resources will be used in the classroom and during after school sessions. Students will learn the day to day financial expenses they will encounter.
This functional financial literacy project will allow our students to make better informed financial decisions as they enter the world of college and careers.
Pretend money, checkbooks, ATM, calculators, board games and books will be used as instructional supplies in the classroom to practice simple banking transactions such as debits, credits, check writing, and counting money. The game board will be modified and used during our culminating event to determine things such as income, career, re-occurring monthly expenses, and unexpected expenses. Our students will have the opportunity to demonstrate their financial skills as they participate in an organized financially based end of course event. Students will use information gained from their assigned socio-economic status and apply the skills learned in class to budget their income.
These activities will provide the education to equip our students with life skills needed in the future. The hope is that they will gain financial literacy that they can pass on for generations to come.
