Financial Literacy Through Dramatic Play

Help me give my students a cash register with coins and dollars, a play phone, and play food to practice real world financial literacy.

My Students

The students at my school are from a rural farm community in Indiana. We have a small school at the edge of a large corporation. Our students come from all socioeconomic backgrounds. We are lucky to have great families that work hard and are involved in our school events, but we don't get a lot of extra funding from the state because our school does not qualify as a Title I school. Title I schools have a higher level of students that qualify for free and reduced-price lunches than we currently have.

My sweet kiddos are hard workers, but they have lots of extra energy and thrive during hands-on activities.

We try to keep moving around our classroom several times throughout the day to help with this. I also have tried to incorporate a flexible seating environment to keep their little bodies wiggling, while engaged in learning, while at our seats. We have had a lot of success when we use hands-on manipulatives and activities.

I love to provide learning opportunities that will get my students moving, thinking, and stimulating their learning by creating.

My Project

I teach kindergarten students and we need to use real-world type scenarios to build their foundation of financial literacy using items like a kid-friendly cash register with coins and dollars to purchase items like things from the grocery store using play food or services such as a doctor visit or medicine using this new doctor kit. They will also recognize numbers when call numbers using the new play phone. I will give them a series of numbers to pretend to call certain people or places.

During our Learning Center Happy Home, my young students will build a foundation of how we use the money to purchase items at our grocery store and pay for services at our doctor's office using these real-life situations.

My hope is that students will start to understand that money is needed to purchase things.
