My Project

We are beginning a unit for math and social studies on the value of money and economics. To bring the idea of money, saving, and spending wisely we will be using a classroom store. The students will earn money in multiple ways: completing their daily duties, working together as a team, showing respect for themselves and others, etc. They will be able to spend these dollars in our classroom store for small rewards. On top of earning, we are having a crash course in the reality of being a responsible spender. Each student will have to pay their weekly bills. This includes renting their daily items (books, iPads, desks) just like they will when they get older (house, electric, food). This will hopefully let them see that they will have a responsibility to take care of their needs (bills) before their wants (store).

Social-Emotional Learning is broken into five categories: Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Social-Awareness, Relationship Skills, and Responsible Decision Making.

Our classroom money and store system will effectively hit all five of those components. The first four components will all need to be used for the students to earn money in the classroom. From building their confidence that they can earn enough money to spend, being organized enough to keep track of their earnings, respecting everybody in class, to building relationships through teamwork. The most important aspect of this unit will be their decision-making skills, where they will be asked to make responsible decisions with their money. This includes not only paying for necessities first but also deciding if the smaller reward is worth the immediate satisfaction or if they should save their money for larger rewards.
