Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are hard-working, young people who come mainly from underrepresented backgrounds in maths and mathematical sciences. Yet, despite their backgrounds, they come to school and shine every day as they learn maths.
Discovering, applying, re-creating and modeling mathematics are just some of the activities my students perform in our classroom.
My students are not just working hard in mathematics, but they are learning to use technology efficiently, and in many instances, they are also learning English as a second or third language.
My Project
My students are missing both basic math and reading skills as they enter high school. What better way to intervene and close both achievement and opportunity gaps than to use financial literacy.
These financial literacy books will motivate my students to learn mathematics as they read with a purpose since these books will serve as inspiration to learn our content via projects.
In particular, we will use these books to embed reading into our mathematics classroom. These books will allow my students to become aware when it comes to financial literacy. Also, as my students learn about financial literacy, we will have a context for many mathematics problems that we will encounter as we master our Common Core State Standards for both content and mathematical practices.
