Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
It excites me that my students want to show how school connects to the real world! Specifically, my students Emily, Nehemiah, Zion and Ceniya want to show their peers how the persuasive strategies they've learned in Literacy can be applied to the business world. This is incredible!
After writing a persuasive essay, my students were very intrigued about how the persuasive writing skills they've learned could be applied to the real world. Ceniya noted many techniques she learned were used in popular automobile commercials. "They make you REALLY want to buy their cars," Zion noted. Emily then said, "How about we use the persuasive strategies to sell school supplies?" The entire class thought it was a brilliant idea. The supplies will be purchased using "school money," which students earn throughout the school day for good behavior. "Let's make this happen. It sounds like big fun," Nehemiah said. "We can teach our peers how important school is to our future." The group agreed, and that's how the idea of this project was born.
One academic skill that will prepare my students for their college and careers is being able to effective write in a persuasive manner. Many college papers involves taking a stance and arguing on behalf of that stance. My students are well versed in this skill in essay form but they don't have the experience in applying the skill to a real-world scenario, such as business. This form of applied learning makes for a brilliant educational experience. A social-emotional skill that would be developed is teamwork.
Students will have to work together to create advertisements that will sell the most school supplies, as they will be in direct competition with their peers (other groups). The best utilization of the persuasive skills used in class can only be reached by multiple students putting their heads together; teamwork will lead to success in this competition, as it does in life.
In Their Own Words
We want to take what we learned in literacy class and apply it to real life. Not too often does this happen in school. Quite often we say, "When am I going to use this in life?" Well, persuasive writing skills directly applies to life and we want to show our classmates how. We want to create advertisements using labels and poster board in order to sell school supplies. The groups who sell the most supplies will have the best advertisements. We'll show our peers how school can apply to life.
Mr. Mehmedovic said this is a student-led project, so WE are leading the way. He already taught us different ways to convince/persuade someone to do something. We wrote great essays with his help. But now it's up to us to create persuasive advertisements using those techniques he taught us. No more help from Mr. Mehmedovic. He'll just be around to make sure we are respecting each other as good teammates should during group work. Success in this project is up to us, and we're excited to work! We want to show our peers how school applies to life.
Many of our peers don't take school seriously because they don't see how it can apply to life. Some of them are already talking about dropping out. We can show how literacy skills like persuasive writing relate directly to life! If you can convince people to buy your item, you will be a successful businessman. Maybe even you'll get rich! Students can become excited about school when they realize how it applies to life. We want to show them!
